Tsimbal O. The Theoric Board in the System of Athenian Financial Offices in the 4th Century B.C
O.G. Tsimbal* THE THEORIC BOARD IN THE SYSTEM OF ATHENIAN FINANCIAL OFFICES The 4th century B.C. in Athens was a time when the political role of financial magistrates and men associated with the sphere of trade and industry significantly increased. Modern researchers often suggest that the expansion of authority of the financial offices, especially the Theoric board, contradicted the principles of the Athenian democracy. The purpose of the paper is to analyse the balance of authorities between the Theoric board and other financial magistracies of the 4th century B.C. and to reveal the system that limited the influence of the Theoricon controllers. The author concludes that although it was not in absolute accordance with the traditions of the Athenian democracy, the authority of the Theoric board did not lead to the concentration of power and was limited by different mechanisms.
