Nefedkin A. Recruitment and Organization of Cavalry in Aetolian League
A.K. Nefedkin* RECRUITMENT AND ORGANIZATION OF CAVALRY IN AETOLIAN LEAGUE The horses were breed in the coastal area of Aetolia. In the cities of the League the horse breeding was a public duty. The horsemen were recruited from the noble youths, who were accompanied by attendants. The cavalry of the League consisted of units of 30 (οὐλαμός), 100, 200 (ἴλη), 400 (ἱππαρχία) cavalrymen. The total figure of the League’s cavalry was ca. 800 and 100 elite cavalry (ἐπίλεκτοι). The οὐλαμόι were tactical units, while the ἶλαι and ἱππαρχίαι – strategic and administrative ones. *A.K.
