Оригинальное сообщение:

The Roman Civil Wars of 49-30 BCE: Problems, Perspectives, and Solutions

As a recent of spate of publications as well as panels and conferences has made clear, there is a renewal of interest in the events that led to the fall of the Roman Republic and the establishment of the Principate. This interest has involved not only the traditional study of the course of events, but also the visual and literary representations of this political and socio-economic revolution. On the one hand, there has been a fundamental re-evaluation of the literary production of Vergil and his contemporaries, the rediscovery of Caesar as both author and statesman, and a new appreciation of the evidence offered by Appian. On the other, important fundamental work has been done regarding the coinage produced in this period, both with a view to the financing of civil war and as regards such central figures as Sextus Pompeius Magnus Pius.

An international workshop will take place in Kavala, Greece, on 25-27 August 2014. Situated upon the northern Aegean sea and in proximity to Philippi, the venue offers the chance not only to discuss the events and their representation by the ancients and across the ages, but also to visit those sites associated with the campaign of Mark Antony and Caesar the Younger against Gaius Cassius and Marcus Brutus. Three days of round-table discussions will be accompanied by public gatherings in the evening and excursions to nearby archaeological sites. The workshop will involve scholars specialising in Classics and Ancient History and aims to appeal to relatively young scholars and be internationally representative.

It is to be expected that many participants will be younger, emerging scholars. Colleagues are invited to submit an abstract of 300-400 words and a one-page CV by 15 November 2013.

All work dealing with any aspect of the Roman civil wars of 49-30 BCE will receive consideration.

Some topics suggested for consideration include:

1) issues of topography and the representation of battle in literature and other artistic media
2) the legal aspects of civil war, whether in terms of cause, prosecution, or resolution
3) the roles played in these civil wars by provincials, allies, and other non-Roman groups
4) the rhetoric of factions and the performance of politics during civil war
3) the Nachleben of the civil wars of 49-30 BCE, over the following decades and centuries

Please send your abstracts to the organizer, Prof. Richard Westall of the Pontificia Università Gregoriana (richard.westall@gmail.com or westall@unigre.it). Confirmation of receipt should come within 3-4 working days, and a preliminary programme will be announced as of 15 January 2014.
